Nanavati, MD
Dr. Vip Nanavati joins EOSM following a three year tenure at
SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. There he served
as a professor of shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand surgery. Dr.
Nanavati was actively involved in the education of fellows, residents,
and medical students. He continues to serve as a shoulder
and elbow instructor at the learning center of the American Academy
of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His expertise comprises treatment of
all Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist, and Hand conditions
including: sports injuries, arthritis, instability, stiffness,
fractures and trauma, as well as injuries involving nerves, muscles,
and tendons.
Dr. Nanavati graduated Magna Cum Laude from Johns Hopkins University
with a degree in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. After
obtaining his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson School
of Medicine in NJ, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency
at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
in Philadelphia, PA. He went on to complete a Wrist
and Hand surgery fellowship at the Philadelphia Hand Center. He
furthered his expertise by completing a fellowship in Shoulder
and Elbow surgery at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson
University Hospital. He is one of only a handful of dual
fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons in both Shoulder
and Elbow as well as Hand and Wrist surgery.
It was through his love for sport, primarily martial arts and
soccer, that Dr. Nanavati’s passion for orthopaedic medicine
grew. He is an accomplished martial artist having achieved
an advanced degree black-belt in Taekwondo. He has competed in
tournaments both at the national and international level.
Research during and after his post-graduate education has been
published in national orthopaedic surgery journals and has presented
at national meetings. He has written textbook chapters
and peer review articles for orthopaedic surgery. He has
also been involved in the development and design of orthopaedic
surgical procedures and devices.
During his orthopaedic training and career, Dr Nanavati has
been involved in the care of a number of professional athletes
from teams including the Philadelphia Phillies, Eagles, Sixers,
and Flyers; as well as several high level athletes from local
schools and universities including Syracuse and Villanova.
Dr. Nanavati’s practice focuses on operative and non-operative
conditions of the Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist, and Hand including
arthroscopy, arthroplasty, repair and reconstruction. He
specializes in the treatment of all conditions affecting
the upper extremity from the shoulder to the fingertip.
Dr. Nanavati is happily married to his wife Heidi. In his
free time, he enjoys kayaking, scuba-diving, cycling, mountaineering,
photography, and cooking.
